Tennis player Sania Mirza has been issued notice by the service tax department in connection with alleged non-payment or evasion of service tax.
Principal commissioner of service tax office here issued the summons to the tennis star on February 6 and appear before it in person or by an authorised agent on February 16.It was issued under Section 65 (104c) of the Service Tax Act, 1994.
“I have reasons to believe you are in possession of facts or/and documents and things which are relevant to the inquiry,” the office’s principal commissioner said in the notice. The notice said that she would also be asked to produce documents and other evidence relating to the matter. However, the notice does not specify the particulars of the case for which Mirza has been summoned.
If Ms. Mirza failed to comply with the summons or intentionally avoided and did not attend or give evidence or produce the documents without lawful excuse, she will be liable to be punished under provisions of Section 174 and 175 of Indian Penal Code, according to the summons.
