Gymnast Dipa Karmakar’s fantastic performance in Rio Olympics 2016 was greeted with many accolades, among which was the luxury BMW vehicle Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar presented to her along with PV Sindhu and Sakshi Malik. However, due to the difficulties in maintenance, Dipa is all set to return the luxury car to its original owner, the president of the Hyderabad Badminton Association (HBA), V Chamundeswaranath.
“There is no showroom or service centre of BMW car in Tripura. If the car developed any technical snag during driving, how would I repair this? There are also not sufficient suitable roads in Agartala and other places of the mountainous state to ply the luxury car,” Dipa told IANS.
“We have spoken to the concerned authority and gladly, they have no problems with it. It was also suggested to them that if possible, they transfer the amount equivalent to the value of the car to Dipa’s bank account. And if not, we will be happy with whatever amount they decide,” said Bishewar Nandi, her coach.
Dipa, who hails from the state capital of Agartala, said she did not take the decision solely by herself, and the issue was decided collectively by her coach, parents and other family members.
Roads in Tripura are not good enough to drive such a vehicle. There are no capable drivers in Agartala town to drive a BMW and the company has no showroom or service centre in the state.
The Hyderabad Badminton Association has reportedly accepted the athlete’s request and is hoping that the monetary equivalent of the cost of the car, which has been transferred to her account, will help her get another car better suited to Tripura’s roads. A new BMW XI cost costs anything between Rs 30 and Rs 35 lakh.Share on Facebook
